3am spares is a new collection of australian electronic dance music compiled andras and instant peterson that encompasses the darker sounds and later nights of the 1990s and beyond. following on from forerunner compilation midnite spares, this double lp draws from local 12? releases, cdrs and the archives of community radio station 3rrr fm to make a diverse and pumping scene audible once more.

olivier kolly aka oktet is back for this 3rd techno home-made release by gravitation crew! the first track is a timeless acid bomb that resounds like the ideal soundtrack of an interplanetary space travel. with his reinterpretation, dmt and knotweed label boss philippe petit continues the space exploration, the planet toward which we’re heading seems more strange and intriguing. 2nd track is as an epic adventure to the borders of real and imaginary. newrhythmic label boss joton gives an hypnotic remix where sirens and tribal rhythms are mixed up. time to take off !

utopia cloak arrives on film with six track ep, marina gardens. utilising both electronic & acoustic components, the british producer crafts hazy, dynamic electronica with a decidedly emotive bent. the music explores a curious production aesthetic - at once half sunk and at the same time gloriously crisp and direct. caustic drum machine hits underpin the majority of the work, compete with polyrhythmic rolls & glitches, while softly warping synth lines occupy the majority of the remaining sonic space. rather than working explicitly with nostalgia, utopia cloak makes more subtle references to the classic sounds of yore - riffing on downtempo & idm with gentle and considered nuance, eking out arcane hooks & rich melodies with a pleasing focus on compositional structure & songcraft. contrast is the key here, though - and utopia cloak works hard to find the balance between metallic per-cussion strikes and wide-angle instrumental elements, avoiding chaos in favour of a lush, rewarding lis-tening experience.

coming next from adult only: the repress of one of the most sought-after 12s from the label back catalogue. ao19: “formula express – main course” was originally released in 2002 and featured guillaume la tortue, jef k and chris carrier.
this is actually some of the last records ever produced by the mysterious guillaume la tortue, one of the pioneer of electronic music in france, who’s quoted by laurent garnier in his infamous “electrochoc” book as one of his main influence back in the days.

the record opens on the “main course”: a classic tech-house number with a beautiful 909 beat and a tasteful use of various samples and fx all through the track. the funky vocals still sound fresh today but the secret here (as often with chris carrier’s related work) is the groove – the kind of groove that reminds you summer days in the park while the strong bass-line announces already the next track.
on the flip, “starter” stands out as the perfect dancefloor killer with an infernal groove and a real fat analog bass-line that will keep you moving whether you want it or not. add just a few crispy tribal percussions on a classic raw 909 beat and you got the simplest and dubbiest song of the record but also the most efficient dancefloorwise.
the last cut, “apple pie”, might be the deepest of them all. spacy melodies and trippy vocals in the background make you first feel like you’re chillin on some extraterrestrial beach far away from earth. it starts as a nice breakbeat building the atmosphere before slowly evolving into a more 4-4esque tech-house with the bass coming in only after a couple of minutes. even if the sound was resolutely analogic, the whole ep is extremely well produced with a special care for details. at many levels this three-track ep is a landmark in the label history.

oufoufof represents the beginning of a new turn for shxcxchcxsh, one born out of a fresh conceptual approach to rhythm. having concentrated in recent years on music for more experimental scenes, shxcxchcxsh wanted to create music for the club, but not with the usual 4/4 approach. ...the main focus being our relationship with the dancers minds and how we do our best to fuck with them . stylistically, the project began with a discussion about rhythm, about what is interesting and what is not. the result is a conceptualized approach, one in which multiple sounds in each track are based around a single rhythmic pattern. this concept has been extended holistically, to track names and artwork. ultimately, what began life as a series of records has evolved into an eight-track lp of twisted, polyrhythmic studies in pattern and texture. fresh off the back of shulululu ep for avian, oufoufof, is the fourth studio long-player from the swedish duo and will be released on their own label rosten

dj haus enters the unknown is a yearly compilation looking back at the last 12 months of uttu releases - some obvious highlights but emphasis on overlooked b sides too. it’s also an opportunity to work with friends outside of the uttu label by including exclusive collaborations and tracks from the uttu extended family. ahead of the full compilation release uttu present a triple vinyl edition of the exclusive tracks and collaborations featuring: legowelt, dj deeon, dj seinfeld, dj normal 4, marquis hawkes, dj boring & many more.

the ohmgrown series is about more music and less industry. its dub phizix way of getting his ideas to people in the fastest way possible. the entire process- sound design, writing, mixing, mastering will be done in-house by dub phizix, as are the visual elements to accompany the music. there will be no set sound or aesthetic to the series instead the focus is on giving people a window into where he’s at musically and what is inspiring him at the time of creation.

for those familiar with the infamous birmingham techno movement, makaton is someone who needs little introduction. for those that arent, the brummie producer is the head of the inimitable rodz-konez and has seen himself showcase his cut-throat techno on seminal labels such as token and blueprint. his first contribution for voitax came at the end of 2017, with iconic dance floor slayer around the throat, which went straight for the jugular on the voi 010 v/a. a good half a year on and we get immaculata - makatons full debut ep for voitax. early support by ancient methods, and, anosme, anastasia kristensen, dave clarke, drumcell, electric indigo, henning baer, inigo kennedy, kangding ray, kwarz, manni dee, matrixxman , marcel dettmann, mark broom, phase fatale, pfirter, rebekah, ruffhouse, stephanie sykes, surgeon, swarm intelligence, svreca, tommy four seven, umwelt and many more.

epic, cinematic & slow driving techno by stiletti-ana (half of helsinki s jesse duo). a-side s beat mix is straight tothe point but still climbs throughout it s entireness with harmonized arpeggio s and phased pads ? b-side reprises thetheme but with no rhythm, more ambience and differently filtered acid.

poker flat recordings drop a new four track ep from greek techno / house producer thanasis voulgaris. under his kindimmer moniker, voulgaris has been putting out quality dancefloor music since 2010, including a handful of releases already for steve bugs iconic poker flat label. ‘merge, the title track sets the tone with a killer, propulsive rhythm, adding chopped up organ stabs and shuffling funky percussion. ‘swift changes has a similar deft touch, all slinky chords that bring about thoughts of the classic detroit sound, while adding his own signature take. ‘its coming is a little harder, with a booming kick and tricky hats, before opening up into another deep bomb that will keep the more discerning floors in raptures. ‘ride with me flexes its funk - the groove jacks a little harder and the vibe is definitely ready to make the basements sweat.

* big, bad and heavy! two of pinch’s biggest dance floor bangers, remixed by one of uk dubstep’s hardest hitters, kromestar. guaranteed rewinds. * ‘the boxer’ first appeared on tectonic back in 2010, fusing grime and dubstep with tribal drums and tearing squarewave bass. kromestar stays true to the original but switches his stance to swing hard with a left hook, southpaw style. after a moody build up, the intro breaks away into a brief moment of calm, before bass comes out fighting, throwing knock out punches hard and fast. tried and tested dancefloor damage of the highest order. * flip then for an equally dangerous remix of pinch’s deep medi release ‘swish’, from back in 2011. simple, effective and deadly, kromestar gives this classic an update, setting it up for another few years of wheel-ups

fienst deep and jazzy influenced house 4 tracker

the elusive producer nortasun hasn’t released a record since his debut one through saft back in 2016. after two years, it’s time for a follow up which is fittingly named “two”. the track titles also resume in a fashionable manner with the opening track being titled: “untitled 3”. on this track, nortasun introduces a firm rhythm that is supported by the impossibly beautiful strings that serve as the tracks key element and appear throughout. next up is the antonzap remix. antonzap doesn’t do the stereotypical remix take on the original. his version is dub laden, otherworldly, and only implements miniscule pieces from the original take. with just under 7 minutes, the remix version is a true sonic voyage.
on the b-side, nortasun takes a more dubbed out approach to modern day house music. “untitled 4” is a work of precision. the carefully crafted hats and dub elements sizzle throughout the entire track and help the track morph into a stunning piece of dance floor music around the four minute mark. nortasun cleverly introduces a thumping bass that changes up the mood for the entire work.

autarkic describe himself as first and foremost a songwriter but he has also made a name for himself as an international dj. over the past three years the musician based in tel aviv has, with great success, played clubs throughout all of europe. one extra memorable gig was on last year’s edition of convenanza in the amphitheatre in sete, france. rumour has it that the sea living mammals of the area flocked in large groups in the waters below during autarkic’s gig. this 12” picture vinyl is his first release on hoga nord rekords and the slightly psychedelic, sample- and synthesiser based club music that has become autarkic’s trademark sound is captured by an impeccable production. the music is playful, yet stripped down to the essentials and not overloaded. the vocal elements works more as percussive elements than the carrier of the storytelling in the music. if you missed him live or just don’t have the means to go see him, this record give a taste of autarkic’s hypnotic live performances!

redimension is the label project of joseph capriati and is run as a platform to champion music that showcases the more underground side of his taste in techno. along with tracks from the label boss himself, its also featured contributions from adam beyer, anthony parasole, flavio folco and rino cerrone. now on its sixth release, the labels latest ep is from klaudia gawlas, a leading lady in the world of techno who plays dj gigs all over europe and other parts of the world.

planet rhythm continues the various artists series with a versatile 4-tracker containing tracks by planet rhythm regulars and a relative newcomer to the scene. the a-side features a deep groover by yan cook as well as an atmposheric track by promising act alpi. the b-side is home to two tracks that lean more toward the harder and more repetitive part of the label’s broad spectrum.

after more than 15 years the legendary dj producer returns with a full length album. eight tracks all about the future that is hiding right under our nose. luke mcmillan provides his familiar signature sounds in a futuristic collection of hardcore beats. he lived the future incognito, and is ready to show us what’s to come.

new zealander julien dyne is a multi-instrumentalist with a long and impressive history of collaborative, live and solo musicianship. best known for his solo work on bbe and having worked with the likes of theo parrish, steve spacek, andreya triana and lord echo - one of soundway’s most successful artists. dyne has also accumulated a number of accolades over the course of a 10-year career including but not exclusive to being hotly tipped by both moodymann and gilles peterson.
dyne’s new project for 2018 is an 11-track lp on miles cleret’s extolled soundway label. demonstrating a shift in gears and movement toward a more uptempo, afro inspired sound ‘teal’ melds instrumental flair with astute production and a persistent grain of impassioned, effortless soul. the album features fellow new zealanders lord echo and mara tk, long term band-mate ladi6, fat freddy’s drop trumpeter toby laing, plus australian vocalist tim guy and jazz luminaries jonathan crayford and john bell. this is a body of work for the listener and the dancer alike with a mood as fitting for headphones as it is for the floor, with the double vinyl album cut loud at 45 rpm.

kevin de vries delivers big room drama on his ‘aratak’ ep for afterlife recordings.
spirited synth lines, drum rolls, gripping moments of silence and weighty kick drums make the title track of de vries’ afterlife debut formidable club gear. ‘sciamachy’ is more subtle, centred around a euphoric arpeggio which spirals to its apex. konstantin sibold contributes a fine remix, toning down certain elements of ‘sciamachy’ to let others shine. it completes an ep that brims with energy and dancefloor dynamism, a hugely exciting first full record for de vries on afterlife.
